Grant to Provide Funding to Domestic Violence Victims During Pandemic

May 21, 2020

Domestic violence is a serious threat for many women. In fact, in the United States 1 in 4 women will be a victim in her lifetime. Research conducted by the Tennessee Women’s Fund Alliance indicates that, due to the pandemic, there are significant emergency needs for the victims of domestic violence in our state. These needs will rise as the shelter in place order is relaxed allowing victims to leave their abusers.

Since its inception, the Women’s Fund of East Tennessee has advocated for victims of domestic violence. Consequently, we are happy to announce we have awarded a $10,000 grant for emergency services to the Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works with 18 agencies in our 25-county areas that they believe will serve our women and children during this difficult time.

Funds received by the Coalition will be used to provide payment to vendors for items including rent, utility bills, relocation and telephone costs. Gas cards will also be provided directly to victims. Because most shelters in our area are at capacity, funds will also be used for hotel stays.

We are gratified that we could address such urgent needs. The grant helps to bring relief to one of the most vulnerable populations in our 25-county area.
